5-Day Northern Iran Highway Restrictions: Key Travel Advisory for Mazandaran Province
Comprehensive traffic plan announced for key holiday routes to ensure public safety and smooth travel.
TEHRAN – The Mazandaran Provincial Police Headquarters has announced a detailed five-day traffic restriction plan for the province’s major northern highways. The measures, which will be in effect from 12:00 PM on Tuesday, September 9th, until 6:00 AM on Saturday, September 13th, are designed to manage the anticipated high volume of holiday travel and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
Restrictions on the Karaj-Chalus Road
Colonel Hadi Abadi, Head of the Mazandaran Road Police, provided a thorough breakdown of the regulations for this critical artery. A central feature of the plan is a complete ban on the movement of all motorcycles, except for those used by security and emergency services for essential duties.
Furthermore, the passage of trailers, trucks, and lorries will be prohibited on the Karaj-Chalus route. Colonel Abadi stated that due to expected high traffic volumes, additional restrictions for all vehicle types will be implemented on Tuesday, September 9th, and Wednesday, September 10th.
The specific timing for the Karaj-Chalus corridor is as follows:
- From 9:00 AM, the road will be completely closed from Marzanabad towards Tehran (north to south).
- Starting at 11:00 AM, a one-way scheme will be enforced from the Zangouleh Bridge (the northern end of the Alborz Tunnel towards Chalus).
- The one-way restriction will be lifted at midnight, and the route from Zangouleh Bridge to Marzanabad will revert to two-way traffic.
The Colonel added that on Thursday, September 11th, and Saturday, September 13th, intermittent one-way restrictions may be implemented in both directions based on real-time traffic conditions and at the discretion of road police officers.
A separate set of restrictions is scheduled for Friday, September 12th:
- From 1:00 PM, travel restrictions will be applied on the Tehran-North Freeway for vehicles destined for Chalus.
- A complete roadblock will be enforced from the beginning of Zangouleh Bridge starting at 2:00 PM.
- From 4:00 PM, the route from Marzanabad towards Tehran will be completely closed.
- All restrictions are scheduled to be lifted at midnight, returning the road to normal two-way traffic.
Colonel Abadi emphasized that if traffic is lighter than anticipated, the one-way plan may conclude earlier than the announced times. Local residents will have access to the old Karaj-Chalus road up to the Zangouleh Bridge area. However, for other vehicles intending to travel to Chalus during the south-to-north restriction period, movement from Amirkabir Square towards Chalus will be prohibited from 11:00 AM.
Traffic Controls on the Haraz Road
Colonel Abadi also outlined restrictions for the Haraz road. A ban on all trailers is in effect. Furthermore, all trucks and lorries—with the exception of those carrying fuel and perishable goods—will be prohibited from using the Haraz road from 8:00 AM to midnight on Tuesday through Friday, September 9th-12th.
Should traffic volumes increase, police may enforce intermittent one-way schemes from Tuesday to Friday in both directions between the Polour and Larijan Road Police checkpoints.
Official Guidance for Travelers
In conclusion, Colonel Abadi urged all drivers planning to use the Mazandaran provincial highways to manage their journeys carefully and adhere strictly to all traffic regulations.
