Iran Revitalizes National Drive for CNG Vehicle Conversion to Boost Energy Security
After a two-year hiatus, a major national initiative to convert gasoline-powered cars to dual-fuel (gasoline/CNG) systems has been relaunched with significant momentum. This strategic move, a key policy of the 13th government, underscores Iran’s commitment to enhancing fuel efficiency, achieving greater energy self-sufficiency, and improving urban air quality.
A Strategic Energy Shift
The program’s revival is a cornerstone of the government’s broader policy to manage fuel consumption, reduce dependency on gasoline, and expand the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) within the national transportation fleet. By promoting dual-fuel vehicles, the initiative aims to increase fuel productivity, curb the financial burden of gasoline imports, and contribute to a cleaner environment in cities.
Accelerated Implementation and Growth
Following the re-organization of the scheme’s main components—including automakers, contractors, and conversion workshops—by the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), the project has seen remarkable progress.
Official statistics reveal a dramatic surge in conversions. According to Azimifar, Deputy Minister and Managing Director of NIORDC, the number of vehicles converted to dual-fuel systems in the first seven months of the current Iranian year reached 32,462. This figure represents a substantial 168% increase compared to the 12,125 vehicles converted in the same period the previous year.
Domestic Technology Fuels Progress
A critical factor in this accelerated rollout is the successful domestic production of the fourth-generation conversion kits. This achievement in technological localization has not only streamlined the conversion process but has also significantly sped it up, allowing for the rapid expansion observed in the last quarter.
Prospective vehicle owners seeking to join this national effort can now register for the conversion program through the official online portal at gcr.niopdc.ir.
