Title: Iran’s Sports Minister Outlines Vision for Sporting Success and Fan Culture at International Games
A Commitment to Excellence on the International Stage
Iran’s Minister of Sport and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, has articulated a confident outlook for the nation’s athletic delegations at international competitions, following the national futsal team’s victory over Tajikistan. Minister Donyamali, who attended the opening ceremony of the Solidarity Games in Riyadh, praised the futsal team’s performance and expressed high hopes for their crucial upcoming matches, aiming for another championship title for Iran.
Strengthening International Sports Ties
A key focus of the minister’s diplomatic efforts has been fostering collaborative sports partnerships. “A central theme of our meetings has been discussions on mutual cooperation with various countries, especially our neighbors and fellow Islamic nations,” Donyamali stated. He highlighted Iran’s historically brilliant record in such games and affirmed that, despite a reduction in the number of disciplines, Iranian athletes are fully prepared to make their nation proud.
Rationalizing Reward Structures for Champions
Addressing the system of financial rewards for medal-winning athletes, the Minister outlined a structured approach based on the level of competition. “The Olympics are our top priority, followed by the Asian Games, World Championships, and then events like the Islamic Solidarity Games,” he explained. He announced plans to review the current reward guidelines to create a more logical distinction between gold and silver medals, emphasizing that “championship is ultimately measured by the gold medal.”
Building on Past Performances
Reflecting on the recent performance of Iran’s youth delegation in Bahrain, Donyamali noted that with just two or three more gold medals, Iran could have placed third in Asia. He confirmed that necessary coordination for the payment of rewards from the past year and the new half-year has been completed, with plans for a formal ceremony.
Promoting a Culture of Sportsmanship and Healthy Rivalry
Minister Donyamali also spoke on the broader sports culture within Iran, underscoring the government’s policy of fostering a spirit of fair competition within a framework of friendship. “This culture must also be present in the stands,” he asserted, referencing recent positive developments in fan behavior ahead of domestic fixtures. He credited meetings with fan associations and clubs for the improved conditions but stressed the need for continued cultural initiatives to ensure a lasting positive atmosphere.
A Collaborative Future for Fan Engagement
Looking ahead, the Minister promised a more prominent role for official fan associations. Through cooperation with clubs and the implementation of cultural programs, the goal is to create a healthier environment in stadiums. He also clarified that the selection of match venues is a coordinated process involving clubs and considerations for fan proximity, with the final decision resting with the league organization.
Regarding the hosting of a major upcoming Tehran football derby, the Minister indicated that Shiraz and Arak are the candidate cities, with Arak’s proximity to Tehran offering logistical advantages for fans. The final announcement will be made by the league organization in coordination with the involved clubs.
