Tehran – In a significant move aimed at addressing economic pressures on households, Iran’s Parliament is actively considering a major overhaul of the national wage-setting mechanism for workers. The proposed reforms are designed to create a more responsive system that better protects purchasing power in the face of economic fluctuations.
A Shift from Annual Adjustments
Ahmad Fatemi, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s Social Commission, outlined the new proposals, emphasizing that the current system of annual salary increases is no longer sufficient. He stated that the static nature of yearly adjustments fails to keep pace with the dynamic and changing inflation rates, which progressively erode the real income of workers.
The Tri-Annual Increase Proposal
The central proposal under review is to transition from a single annual wage increase to three adjustments per year. This structural change is intended to shorten the gap between wage levels and inflationary pressures.
“This change can help create a balance between inflation and wages,” Fatemi explained, “and it will prevent a further shrinkage in the livelihood standards of workers.” The initiative reflects a direct response to concerns about the cost of living and aims to provide more consistent support for working-class families.
Comprehensive Support Measures
Beyond wage reforms, the Social Commission is also evaluating a suite of proposals focused on improving housing conditions for workers. Fatemi indicated that a number of ideas are on the table, with committee members hopeful about reaching a stable and actionable solution in the short term.
