Title: Esteghlal’s Asian Challenge: A Test of Resilience and Focus
Tehran – Esteghlal Tehran is set for a pivotal encounter in the AFC Champions League Two, facing a must-win scenario against UAE’s Al Wasl to keep their hopes of advancing from the group stage alive.
The Iranian powerhouse, under the guidance of coach Ricardo Sá Pinto, prepares to host the group leaders, who delivered a heavy defeat to the Blues in the reverse fixture. With the group standings hanging in the balance, securing three points at home is imperative for Esteghlal.
In an exclusive interview, Reza Rajabi, a club veteran and current manager of Esteghlal B, dissected the team’s recent form and prospects.
Navigating Domestic Cup Challenges
Addressing Esteghlal’s recent hard-fought victory against a lower-division side in the domestic cup, Rajabi pointed to a combination of factors. “Teams from lower tiers are incredibly motivated, especially with live broadcasts of the matches,” he explained. “They close down spaces with intense running. When you concede an early goal to such a motivated team, and they then shut up shop defensively, the task becomes very difficult.”
He also highlighted the significant challenge of substandard pitch conditions, stating, “We must put an end to playing football on such poor pitches. It’s nearly impossible to play a proper game on them. Our star players simply cannot control the ball effectively under those circumstances.”
A Look Ahead: The Al Wasl Rematch
Looking forward to the crucial Asian contest against Al Wasl, Rajabi urged for perspective. “That heavy defeat from a few weeks ago must be forgotten. Fortunately, Esteghlal has regrouped and is now among the top teams in our domestic league.”
Dismissing any notion of fear among the players, he emphasized their professionalism. “The players are professionals; what is there to fear? They will do their job. That previous result was an anomaly, not a true reflection of the gap between the two teams—it was an exceptional day for Al Wasl.”
He suggested the pressure might instead be on the Emirati side. “The opposite scenario could occur; they might become overconfident. This match is like a double-edged sword.”
Balancing Ambitions: Asia and the League
When asked about Esteghlal’s chances of progressing in Asia, Rajabi expressed cautious optimism while underscoring the importance of domestic success. “The chance certainly exists. However, my belief is that Esteghlal should exert all its efforts to win the league title this year. Asia will be there next season. They shouldn’t neglect the continental competition, but their primary focus should ideally be on the league.”
Regarding his own position with Esteghlal B, Rajabi remained unfazed by speculative reports in the digital space. “I continue to do my work. The club’s management are not individuals who pay heed to such unhelpful online chatter,” he stated confidently.
As Esteghlal enters this critical phase, the team’s ability to overcome past setbacks and maintain focus on its dual objectives will be paramount to its success this season.
