Iran’s Firm Stance at the UN Security Council: Demanding Accountability for Violations of International Law
In a decisive diplomatic move, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has formally condemned the United States and the Israeli regime for what he describes as an “aggressive act” against Iran’s sovereignty.
A Formal Accusation
In an official letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, Ambassador Iravani detailed the allegations. He stated that a coordinated “aggressive act” was committed against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This action, he argued, constitutes a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.
The senior diplomat emphasized that the attacks deliberately targeted civilians and non-military infrastructure, demonstrating a “flagrant disregard for the fundamental principles of international law and international humanitarian law.”
Legal Demands and the Path Forward
The letter outlines specific legal and financial demands. Ambassador Iravani asserted that the United States is obligated under international law to provide “full compensation for all damages” incurred by Iran and its citizens as a result of these violations. This includes both material and moral damages and the commitment to restore the situation to its original state.
Furthermore, the diplomat clarified that the official acknowledgments of involvement by the US necessitate individual criminal responsibility for the officials and persons who participated in these “serious violations of international humanitarian law,” including the crime of aggression.
Reserving the Right to Legal Action
Crucially, the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves its “full and undeniable right” to pursue all available legal avenues. The objective is to establish an accountability mechanism for those responsible and to secure full reparation for all losses resulting from what Iran terms an “internationally wrongful act.”
The letter calls upon the UN Security Council and the wider UN system to take appropriate action to ensure accountability for the United States and the Israeli regime, urging them to uphold their responsibility in maintaining international peace and security.
