Title: Tehran Implements Traffic Scheme to Combat Air Pollution
Introduction
In a decisive move to address rising air pollution levels, authorities in Tehran have announced the reinstatement of a comprehensive traffic restriction plan. The emergency measure, set for immediate effect, aims to significantly reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality across the capital.
Key Details of the Traffic Plan
Brigadier General Seyed Abolfazl Mousavi Pour, Chief of Tehran’s Traffic Police, confirmed that the “Odd-Even” traffic scheme will be enforced. The restrictions will be in place from 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM, regulating vehicle access based on their license plate numbers. This initiative was activated following a directive from the Emergency Air Pollution Committee at the Tehran Governorate.
Expanded Restrictions on Heavy Vehicles
The measures extend beyond passenger cars. The traffic police chief further announced a ban on the movement of trucks and heavy vehicles within the city, with an exemption granted only to those transporting essential supplies such as fuel, medicine, and foodstuffs. This ban will be enforced around the clock.
Enforcement and Compliance
Authorities have emphasized a strict adherence to the new regulations. Tehran’s Traffic Police will actively monitor for violations of the Odd-Even scheme. Furthermore, in a parallel effort to tackle pollution at its source, police will also be targeting and impounding vehicles that fail emission standards and lack a valid technical inspection certificate.
Suspension of Daily Permits
To maximize the effectiveness of the traffic reduction plan, the issuance of daily traffic zone permits by the Tehran Municipality has been temporarily suspended. This step ensures a unified and robust approach to managing the city’s traffic flow during this critical period.
