Moscow Demands End to ‘Illegal’ US Pressure on Tanker, Citing International Law
MOSCOW – Russia’s Foreign Ministry has issued a strong diplomatic call to Washington, urging an immediate halt to what it describes as “illegal actions” against the Marinera oil tanker and demanding adherence to international law and humanitarian principles. Moscow underscored its expectation that the United States facilitate the prompt return of Russian citizens serving on the vessel.
Call for Adherence to International Law
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry asserted that Washington must uphold the rule of law and immediately cease its “illegal actions” targeting the Marinera oil tanker. The Ministry emphasized Russia’s stance on the inviolability of international maritime law, stating, “Moscow urges Washington to once again adhere to the fundamental norms and principles of international free navigation in open waters and immediately end its illegal actions against the Marinera tanker and other vessels operating legitimately in international waters.” This direct challenge highlights a key point of contention in international relations regarding maritime jurisdiction and enforcement.
Humanitarian Concerns for Russian Crew
Beyond the vessel itself, Moscow also raised significant humanitarian concerns regarding the Russian crew members aboard the Marinera. The Ministry reiterated its demand that the United States treat these citizens with dignity and respect their full rights and interests. “We once again demand that the United States treat Russian citizens, members of the tanker’s crew, humanely and appropriately, fully respect their rights and interests, and create no obstacles for their speedy return home,” the statement read. This aspect of the demand underscores the importance Moscow places on the welfare of its nationals caught in such situations, adding a human dimension to the broader political dispute.
