Iraq Asserts Full Sovereignty: Army Takes Command of Strategic Ain al-Asad Base
The Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced Saturday that the Iraqi Army has fully assumed control of the strategic Ain al-Asad airbase in Anbar province. This transfer marks a significant milestone in Iraq’s assertion of national sovereignty and reinforces its indigenous defense capabilities following the complete withdrawal of American forces from the installation.
A Unified Command at Ain al-Asad
General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah, Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army, directly oversaw the comprehensive handover process. His visit to the base focused on the meticulous distribution of missions and responsibilities among the various military units and formations now stationed at Ain al-Asad. He was greeted by commanders including those from Al-Jazeera Operations, the base itself, and the 2nd Special Forces Brigade. Accompanying General Yarallah was a high-ranking delegation, including the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, commanders of the Ground, Air, and Army Aviation Forces, and key intelligence and media officials, underscoring the strategic importance of this transition.
Strategic Reorganization and Readiness
Upon arrival, General Yarallah closely monitored the transfer of the base’s security file and supervised the deployment of newly assigned units. These include the 65th Special Forces Brigade and its affiliated battalions, along with the strategic positioning of headquarters for the Air Force and Army Aviation. He conducted thorough inspections of all sections of the base, assessing service facilities, infrastructure, and administrative and logistical readiness. These evaluations aim to ensure the highest level of preparedness for the full and precise execution of assigned missions.
Reinforcing National Control and Security
The full control of Ain al-Asad, described by General Yarallah as one of the most vital military installations under the Iraqi armed forces’ purview, signifies a critical step in strengthening Iraq’s independent defense posture. The Chief of Staff issued directives to base authorities, urging intensified efforts, robust joint work, and enhanced coordination among all deployed units. He underscored the imperative to fully leverage the strategic position and capabilities of the base through a spirit of teamwork and efficient task distribution, ultimately guaranteeing its enduring security and protection.
