Title: Iran Expands Electronic Subsidy Program to Support Low-Income Households – Latest Updates
Government Launches Third Phase of Food Subsidy Initiative
The Iranian government has rolled out the third phase of its electronic subsidy voucher program, aimed at supporting low-income households and strengthening food security for income deciles 1 through 7. The initiative, which began on June 27, 2024, provides monthly credits for essential food purchases.
Under the first step of Phase 3, deciles 1 to 3 received 500,000 tomans per person, while deciles 4 and 5 were included in the second step starting July 21, 2024, with 350,000 tomans allocated per person. The Ministry of Cooperatives confirmed that these subsidies are strictly for purchasing 11 essential goods, including dairy, protein (meat, poultry, eggs), and groceries (rice, oil, legumes, etc.).
Current Status: Delays in August Allocations
Despite the phased disbursements in July, no new credits have been added to the electronic subsidy accounts as of mid-August. The only confirmed payment this month has been the regular cash subsidy, with no official announcement yet regarding the next voucher recharge.
Government officials have emphasized that securing sustainable funding remains a priority to continue the program. A spokesperson stated that while resources currently cover only the first three deciles, efforts are underway to expand support to all seven targeted income groups.
How to Check Subsidy Balances
Eligible households can verify their subsidy status through:
- SMS notifications from v.refah (balance updates only, no links).
- USSD code #1463500 (via mobile).
- Helpline 021-6369.
Government Commitment to Long-Term Support
Ahmad Meydari, Minister of Cooperatives, Labor, and Social Welfare, reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to the subsidy program, calling it a “necessary and justifiable measure” for low-income families. He stressed that even under normal economic conditions, continuous support for the first three deciles remains essential.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Parliament, also endorsed the initiative, highlighting its role in preventing inflationary pressures and ensuring fair access to basic goods.
What’s Next?
While Phase 4 details remain unconfirmed, the Ministry of Cooperatives has indicated that an official announcement on the next stage—including target groups and credit allocations—will be released soon.
This program reflects the government’s broader strategy to combat inflation and protect vulnerable households through direct, non-cash assistance. Public appreciation for the initiative continues to grow, reinforcing its impact on food security for millions of Iranians.
