Iran’s Top Diplomat Calls on EU for “Serious Policy Rethink” Amid Regional Tensions
TEHRAN, Iran – Iran’s Foreign Minister has urged the European Union to undertake a “serious policy rethink,” criticizing what he described as the bloc’s “unconstructive approaches” towards the Islamic Republic and its “incorrect stances” on regional issues. The strong admonition came during a phone conversation with the Foreign Minister of Cyprus, who welcomed the recent resumption of nuclear talks between Iran and the United States.
Cypriot Outreach and Call for Dialogue
During the call, the Cypriot Foreign Minister expressed his country’s support for the new round of nuclear negotiations, emphasizing the critical importance of sustained dialogue and de-escalation of tensions. He also conveyed Cyprus’s readiness to offer any assistance to facilitate progress in the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Iran Denounces EU Policies
In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister voiced sharp criticism of the European Union’s conduct, highlighting what he termed its “inappropriate approaches” towards Iran. He specifically denounced the recent action by the EU Council of Ministers to designate a segment of Iran’s armed forces, calling it an “insulting intervention.” The Iranian diplomat further condemned the EU’s perceived unwarranted interference in Iran’s internal affairs.
Regional Stances Under Scrutiny
The Foreign Minister also took issue with the EU’s positions on regional developments, citing the “genocide in Gaza” and the “crimes of the Zionist regime against regional nations.” He asserted that these EU stances stand in direct contradiction to the principle of the rule of law and disregard for the fundamental principles and rules of international law.
Demand for Policy Reassessment
Concluding his points, the Iranian Foreign Minister unequivocally called for a comprehensive and “serious reconsideration” by the European Union of its current, unconstructive approaches. He underlined the necessity for the EU to align its policies with international legal frameworks and foster more constructive engagement.
Update on Nuclear Talks
Separately, the Iranian Foreign Minister also provided his Cypriot counterpart with an update on the latest developments regarding the ongoing nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States.
