The announcement was made by Abbas Pazoki, Deputy for Communications and Information of the First Vice President’s Office.

In a statement disseminated via his social media account, Mr. Pazoki conveyed the profound sorrow of the Iranian government. “The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran is saddened by the lives lost in the January incidents and considers itself a partner in their 40-day mourning,” he wrote. He further indicated that a nationwide memorial, a traditional observance in Iranian culture marking the fortieth day after a loss, would be held to honor “the children of Iran,” with specific details to be announced subsequently. The statement concluded with a poignant Persian verse, “From the blood of the homeland’s youth, tulips have bloomed,” underscoring a spirit of national resilience and remembrance.
Presidential Directive for National Committee
This national commemoration follows the establishment of a dedicated National Headquarters for Investigating January Incidents. Formed by a directive from President Masoud Pezeshkian and chaired by First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, the high-level committee comprises several cabinet members and officials from outside the government. Its primary mandate is to conduct a thorough and accurate root-cause analysis of the incidents, bridge any existing societal divisions, and implement robust measures to prevent their recurrence.
