Title: Iran Closely Monitors Developments in the South Caucasus, Stresses Regional Stability
Iran’s Strategic Stance on the South Caucasus
In a recent interview, Esmail Baqaei, spokesperson for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, outlined Iran’s position on the evolving situation in the South Caucasus. Emphasizing the region’s political, economic, and geopolitical significance, Baqaei stated that Iran and neighboring countries—particularly Russia—view stability in the South Caucasus as a shared priority.
Vigilance Against Misinformation and External Interference
Baqaei underscored Iran’s careful monitoring of developments near its northwestern borders, affirming that Tehran neither oversimplifies nor underestimates regional dynamics. He warned against misinterpretations and the spread of false information, which could disrupt Iran’s relations with South Caucasus nations.
“Some analyses are based on incorrect data and may aim to sow discord between Iran and regional partners,” he cautioned, urging stakeholders to avoid misleading terminology that could escalate tensions.
Border Security and Regional Rail Connectivity
Addressing Armenia’s border demarcation process, Baqaei stressed the need for precision and sensitivity. He also referenced the recent Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, noting the disruption of southern Armenia’s railway route. However, he clarified that Armenian officials assured Iran the railway’s reconstruction would involve Armenian and a U.S.-registered company—with no foreign military presence along the borders.
Iran’s Red Line: No Foreign Military Presence
Reiterating Iran’s firm stance, Baqaei labeled external interference as a “red line.” He cited Article 12 of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement, which bars foreign military forces near shared borders. “We strongly oppose foreign troop deployments, as they exacerbate geopolitical complexities,” he stated, adding that Armenia recognizes the risks of such presence.
Commitment to Regional Stability and Bilateral Cooperation
Concluding his remarks, Baqaei reaffirmed Iran’s robust ties with South Caucasus states and its readiness to bolster bilateral cooperation. “The Islamic Republic supports all measures enhancing regional stability and security,” he declared, highlighting Iran’s role as a stabilizing force in the South Caucasus.
