Germany Upholds West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem as Bedrock for Future Palestine, Rejects Broader Territorial Claims
### Germany’s Definitive Stance on Palestinian Statehood
Germany’s Foreign Ministry has unequivocally stated that the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem constitute the fundamental territories for a future Palestinian state. This declaration underscores Berlin’s commitment to a two-state solution amidst ongoing regional political complexities and follows a strong rejection of expansive territorial claims in the Middle East.
### Rejection of Controversial Territorial Assertions
On Monday, Germany openly challenged remarks by the then-US Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, who had suggested the Jewish state would, according to biblical interpretations, eventually control land stretching from the Nile to the Euphrates. The German government swiftly distanced itself from such assertions.
Kathrin Deschauer, a spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry, emphasized Berlin’s clear position during a press briefing in Berlin. “Germany has taken note of the reactions from numerous countries in the region,” Deschauer stated. “I want to clarify once again the position of the German government. The West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem are the starting point for a future Palestinian state, and this is the basis from which we operate.”
### Regional Condemnation and International Law
Arab nations had previously condemned Friedman’s remarks, describing them as “absurd and provocative,” unacceptable, and contrary to international law. Germany’s stance aligns with this broader international perspective that underscores the importance of a diplomatic resolution based on established principles and international legal frameworks.
### Commitment to a Two-State Solution and Peaceful Coexistence
Deschauer further elaborated on Germany’s commitment to peace, stating, “This is our position, and it is also the position that offers the best opportunity for peaceful coexistence with the aim of achieving a two-state solution.”
Berlin also reiterated its long-standing opposition to the expansion of Israeli settlements, asserting that such activities solidify occupation rather than contributing positively to the prospects of peace. This consistent policy reinforces Germany’s commitment to a negotiated settlement that respects international boundaries and paves the way for a viable Palestinian state alongside Israel.
