US Political Leaders Condemn Trump’s Iran War Plan as “Illegal and Hostile Aggression”
As tensions mount, a broad coalition of prominent American political figures, including New York City Mayor Zahraan Mamdani and several potential 2028 presidential candidates, have vociferously denounced any potential war efforts by President Donald Trump against Iran, branding such actions as “illegal aggression” that lacks justification for the American people.
Mayor and Gubernatorial Opposition to Conflict
New York City Mayor Zahraan Mamdani was among the first to speak out, labeling joint US-Israel military strikes against Iran as an “illegal aggressive war.” Mayor Mamdani emphasized that bombing cities, killing civilians, and opening a new war front are not what Americans desire. Instead, she asserted, the American public seeks solutions to the rising cost of living and peace, not “another war for regime change.”
Further condemnation came from a cohort of Democratic leaders positioning themselves for the 2028 presidential race. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned Trump’s involvement in what he termed an “illegal and dangerous war” that would needlessly jeopardize the lives of American forces and allies. Pete Buttigieg, former Secretary of Transportation, echoed these sentiments, stating that such attacks would expose American citizens to danger without addressing their pressing domestic concerns. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear demanded a full explanation from President Trump to both Congress and the American people, citing the significant risks posed to US forces. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker criticized the proposed attacks as “unjustified, unauthorized by Congress, and lacking a clear objective,” accusing Trump of disregarding the need for proper justification or the safety of American troops.
Congressional Pushback and Calls for Oversight
The opposition extended into the halls of Congress, with several Democratic senators demanding legislative action to curb presidential war powers. Senator Patty Murray called for an immediate Congressional vote to end the conflict, urging every member to vote “on the right side of history” against war with Iran.
Senator Tim Kaine also pressed the Senate to convene and vote on his proposal to limit the President’s war-making authority, aimed at preventing the use of forces in hostile actions against Iran. Kaine described such an endeavor as “dangerous, unnecessary, and foolish.”
Bernie Sanders Leads Broader Democratic Consensus Against War
Senator Bernie Sanders delivered a particularly strong rebuke, asserting that Donald Trump, in concert with “his far-right Israeli ally, Benjamin Netanyahu,” had initiated an “illegal, designed, and unconstitutional war.” Sanders characterized the alleged attacks as a clear violation of international law destined to lead to greater instability.
“It is a tragedy,” Sanders stated, “that Trump is playing with American lives to fulfill Netanyahu’s decades-long ambition to drag Washington into armed conflict with Iran.” Under the banner of “No War with Iran,” Sanders warned that the American people were being deceived once again, drawing parallels to past conflicts in Vietnam and Iraq, and cautioned that “ordinary people will pay the price.”
Other prominent Democratic senators, including Andy Kim, Elizabeth Warren, and Chris Murphy, joined the consensus, affirming that Americans do not want war with Iran. Warren added that “America First” does not mean dragging the country into an endless war based on falsehoods. Murphy, for his part, deemed Trump’s attacks “highly illegal and a grave mistake.”
The widespread condemnation highlights a significant political challenge for any potential military action against Iran, signaling a deep-seated opposition within American political circles to foreign entanglements perceived as illegal, unjustified, and detrimental to domestic priorities.
