Title: Power Outages Explained: Officials Cite Hydropower Shortages and Heatwaves
Subheading: Energy Chief Confirms Temporary 4-Hour Blackouts in Select Cities
The CEO of Iran’s Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution Management Company (Tavanir), Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, has confirmed recent reports of temporary four-hour power outages in certain cities, attributing them to two key factors.
Hydropower Shortages and Rising Demand
Rajabi Mashhadi explained that a significant portion of the country’s hydropower capacity has been lost due to dwindling water reserves in dams, leading to tighter electricity supply constraints. Additionally, a new wave of extreme heat has spiked demand, particularly in high-consumption areas, straining the power grid and triggering outages.
Limited and Temporary Measures
The official emphasized that the blackouts—split into two two-hour intervals—are not widespread or permanent. They primarily affect select cities where grid pressure is highest. Rajabi Mashhadi assured that with public cooperation in energy conservation and as summer temperatures ease, the outages will first reduce to two-hour intervals before being fully resolved.
The company remains committed to stabilizing supply and minimizing disruptions as it addresses these challenges.
