Iraqi Leadership Condemns Attacks on State Security Forces, Citing Sovereignty Breach
Baghdad, Iraq – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, alongside the influential Shiite Coordination Framework, has vehemently condemned recent attacks targeting the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and other Iraqi security units. The Iraqi leadership asserted that these actions constitute a grave violation of the nation’s sovereignty and pose a direct threat to its stability.
Prime Minister’s Warning on Regional Instability
Prime Minister Al-Sudani, in remarks carried by Arab media outlets, underscored the perils of ongoing regional tension. He warned that persistent instability inevitably fosters chaos, fuels extremism, and critically disrupts global supply chains, highlighting the broader implications for regional and international security.
Emergency Session Addresses Security Landscape
In response to the escalating security situation, the Shiite Coordination Framework convened an emergency meeting on Saturday at the government palace. The high-level session hosted the head of the Popular Mobilization Forces and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. With the Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces present, participants undertook a comprehensive assessment of Iraq’s security landscape amidst recent developments.
During the meeting, attendees unequivocally denounced the attacks that targeted the headquarters of PMF and other security forces, resulting in both fatalities and injuries. The statement emphasized that those targeted were “individuals performing duties as official military units to maintain the security and stability of the country.” The Coordination Framework described these assaults as “treacherous attacks” and a clear “violation of Iraq’s sovereignty,” which endangers its national security and stability.
Commitment to Protecting State Assets and Diplomacy
The meeting further reaffirmed the Iraqi leadership’s unwavering opposition to any targeting of vital government facilities and diplomatic missions. Participants stressed the paramount importance of upholding stringent security measures to safeguard these entities and their headquarters, pledging to pursue and hold accountable those who endanger their security.
Reports of External Involvement
Iraqi media outlets had reported earlier on Saturday evening that units of the Popular Mobilization Forces in the Tuz Khurmatu district of Salah al-Din province were subjected to what was described as a “Zionist-American attack.” The reports also referenced prior instances where “the United States and the Zionist regime” had targeted various areas within Iraq.
