Trump’s Iran Strategy Triggers Widespread US Backlash Amid Economic Worries
Washington D.C. – A new CBS News poll reveals significant public discontent in the United States over a recent conflict involving the US and Iran, particularly highlighting its impact on the American economy and the Trump administration’s management of the situation. A majority of Americans believe the conflict is not progressing favorably, and over half perceive it as a matter of choice rather than necessity.
Economic Impact Takes Center Stage
The survey, conducted from March 16-19, 2026, among 2,103 US adults, underscores that Americans weigh both international objectives and domestic repercussions when evaluating military engagements. The rising cost of gasoline, a direct consequence of the escalating tensions, has intensified economic concerns across the nation.
Seventy-seven percent of respondents reported experiencing higher gas prices, contributing to a widespread belief that the conflict will weaken the US economy. Seventy-two percent anticipate a negative short-term economic impact, while 52% foresee long-term damage, despite government calls for patience.
Origins of the Conflict and Iran’s Response
The poll’s findings emerge against a backdrop of increased tensions, following a period described in the report as the initiation of military actions against Iran by the United States and Israel in late February. This was met with reciprocal action from Tehran, leading to Iran’s armed forces launching “Operation True Promise 4.” This operation, characterized as a response to perceived aggression, reportedly included extensive missile and drone attacks on US military bases in the region and military centers within the Israeli regime.
The report also indicates that regulations imposed on shipping and oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz led to an increase in oil prices, causing fuel shortages and price surges in the US. These developments are seen as contributing to citizen dissatisfaction with the decision to engage in the conflict.
Public Dissatisfaction with Trump’s Handling
Despite continued support from his Republican base, Donald Trump faces considerable public disapproval regarding his handling of the conflict. Sixty percent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the President’s management of the situation, with his approval rating specifically for the Iran conflict standing at just 34%, lower than his overall approval of approximately 40%. His approval for managing the economy and inflation also lagged at 35%.
A significant 57% of Americans believe the Trump administration has not clearly articulated the objectives of the conflict, a figure that has risen since its outset. Furthermore, 48% anticipate that the deployment of ground troops to Iran may become necessary.
A “War of Choice” and Uncertain Duration
The survey reveals a broad perception that the conflict is not going well, with 60% of respondents, largely those who opposed the engagement from the start, expressing this view. They cited a lack of governmental transparency regarding the war’s objectives and uncertainty about its duration as key grievances.
Regarding the conflict’s nature, 56% of Americans label it a “war of choice,” contrasting with 29% who deem it “necessary.” The public also remains divided on how long the conflict might last, with 37% expecting it to continue for months, 24% for years, and a third remaining unsure.
Support for US military action against Iran has notably declined since the conflict began, now standing at 43% in favor versus 50% opposed. Support remains largely confined to Republicans (79%), while only 18% of Democrats and 33% of Independents back the military actions.
