Tehran Official Urges Immediate Relocation of Fuel Tanks from Shahran Heights
Tehran, Iran – A prominent member of the Tehran City Council has issued a strong call for the urgent relocation of fuel storage facilities from the Shahran Heights, citing significant safety, security, and environmental concerns for the capital’s residents.
A Long-Standing Urban Safety Concern
Nasser Amani highlighted that the issue of the oil company’s installations, situated in the northwestern heights of Tehran, has been a point of discussion within the City Council for years. He stated that even under normal, non-crisis conditions, council members were deeply concerned about the risks posed by fuel tankers traveling through the area and the inherent dangers of the facilities themselves.
“Recent events have demonstrated just how serious and critical this issue truly is,” Amani remarked, underscoring the need for prompt action from Tehran’s Crisis Management Headquarters.
Security and Psychological Impact Highlighted
The official emphasized that potential targeting of such sensitive and high-risk infrastructure in residential zones would have profound consequences. “It would not only impact security but also have a massive psychological effect on the surrounding population,” he explained. This has reinforced the council’s insistence on the immediate transfer of these facilities out of Tehran’s urban limits, particularly from the Shahran Heights.
A Formal Request for Action
Amani confirmed that a formal request has been made to the National Oil Company, urging it to develop a specific and actionable plan to move the installations to a secure location outside Tehran. He clarified that this demand is not solely related to times of conflict, noting that the facilities represent a persistent threat to nearby residents even during peacetime.
Environmental Consequences Addressed
Citing statements from the head of the country’s Environmental Protection Organization, Amani pointed to the environmental damage caused by recent fires at the Shahran facilities. “Environmental experts announced that the burning of these tanks led to the release of pollutants into Tehran’s air,” he said. “This is just one dimension of the crisis; its other dangers persist and cannot be ignored.”
A Top Priority for City Officials
The council member affirmed that the matter is being pursued with the utmost seriousness, noting that Mehdi Chamran, the Chairman of the Tehran City Council, had also previously corresponded on the issue. Amani called on all relevant authorities to prioritize this initiative, concluding, “The health of citizens, urban security, and the public’s peace of mind must not be sacrificed due to delays in relocating these facilities.”
