UN Peacekeepers’ Eyes Blinded: UNIFIL Cameras Destroyed in Southern Lebanon Amid Regional Tensions
UNIFIL Expresses Grave Concern Over Israeli Actions
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has voiced significant alarm following the destruction of surveillance cameras at its headquarters in the Naqoura area of southern Lebanon. UNIFIL stated that Israeli military personnel systematically dismantled all cameras overlooking “Al-Mangi Street” at the main base.
Security Cameras Essential for Peacekeeper Safety
According to Candice Ardiel, UNIFIL’s spokesperson, who addressed the situation via the social media platform X, the targeted cameras were solely intended for monitoring the immediate surroundings of the base. Their purpose was to ensure the safety and security of both military and civilian personnel stationed at the UN facility.
Formal Protest Lodged as UN Mandate Underlines Responsibility
UNIFIL has formally communicated its deep concerns regarding this incident to the Israeli military and intends to submit a formal protest. The peacekeeping force has reiterated that Israel bears the responsibility to guarantee the safety of UN personnel and to respect the inviolability of UN premises.
Background of Escalating Tensions
This development occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions. Notably, in late March, the United Nations Security Council convened a session to discuss the targeting of UNIFIL personnel in Lebanon and the tragic loss of three peacekeepers during ongoing clashes between Hezbollah and Israel. This latest incident underscores the complex and volatile security environment faced by international peacekeeping operations in the region.
