Iran Suspends Nuclear Cooperation with IAEA Following Attacks on Peaceful Facilities
Iranian President Enforces Parliamentary Mandate to Halt Nuclear Collaboration
In response to recent attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, President Masoud Pezeshkian has officially enacted a parliamentary mandate requiring the suspension of the country’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The decision, formalized in Presidential Letter No. 55024 dated June 30, 2024, follows the approval of the bill by Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) on June 24, 2024.
Parliamentary Action Triggered by Security Threats
The legislative move comes after alleged violations of Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity by the Zionist regime and the United States, which targeted the nation’s peaceful nuclear infrastructure. Citing Article 60 of the 1969 Vienna Convention on treaties, the bill mandates the immediate suspension of all IAEA cooperation under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its safeguards until security conditions—including the protection of nuclear facilities and scientists—are guaranteed.
Swift Legislative and Executive Implementation
Last week, after the Guardian Council ratified the bill, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf formally communicated the legislation to the president for enforcement. The measure underscores Iran’s commitment to safeguarding its national interests while adhering to international legal frameworks.
This decision reflects Iran’s stance on preserving its sovereign rights amid external pressures, reinforcing its dedication to peaceful nuclear activities under secure and just conditions.
