Iran’s Social Security Organization Vows to Protect Pensioners’ Rights and Resources
In a decisive meeting with worker and retiree representatives from Fars Province, the Managing Director of Iran’s Social Security Organization (SSO), Mostafa Salari, outlined a firm commitment to safeguarding the institution’s future and ensuring equitable services for all beneficiaries.
A Stand for Reform and Equity
Addressing the interactive forum, part of a series of “Deliberative Meetings for Transformative Change,” Mr. Salari emphasized the critical necessity for ongoing reforms within the SSO. He characterized the organization as an intergenerational fund belonging to millions of Iranians, stating, “To protect the future of social security and its resources—which are a public trust—we will stand firm against the pressures of groups who have unjustly gained privileges.”
Navigating Financial Challenges
A central point of the discussion was the historical imbalance between the organization’s income and expenditures. Mr. Salari provided a detailed financial breakdown, explaining that for the current year, out of a total expenditure of 1,500 hamt (a unit of account), 1,200 hamt is covered by insurance premiums. The remaining resources, he noted, must be generated through investments and returns from the SSO’s investment arm, SHASTA, though its current contribution is limited.
The Managing Director also underscored the paramount importance of recouping the organization’s receivables from the government and the prudent management of costs related to early and hazardous retirement schemes.
A Pledge of Service and Transparency
The meeting served as a platform to address key concerns raised by representatives, including healthcare infrastructure, interest-free loan facilities, pilgrimage support programs, the status of SHASTA companies, and insurance coverage for construction workers. Mr. Salari assured attendees that these issues would undergo expert review and that subsequent decisions would be announced transparently.
Reiterating the organization’s core mission, he said, “All our efforts are dedicated to providing fair services to retirees and the insured. No individual or consultant is permitted to misuse the organization’s resources.” He concluded by framing the protection of social security reserves as both a “human and national duty,” vowing continued resistance against excessive demands.
The session was attended by the SSO’s managing director, deputies, managers, and representatives from various labor councils and associations in Fars Province.
