Iran’s Deputy FM Rejects EU Diplomat’s Remarks on Nuclear Program, Upholds Peaceful Rights Under NPT
Iran Reaffirms Peaceful Nuclear Rights, Criticizes EU Diplomat’s Claims
Tehran, Iran – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has firmly responded to recent remarks by a senior European Union diplomat regarding the country’s nuclear program, emphasizing Iran’s unwavering commitment to its rights under international agreements.
Misinterpretation of NPT Rights
Araghchi stated that if the EU’s coordinator for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) believes the purpose of any potential negotiations is to “end Iran’s nuclear program,” it demonstrates a blatant disregard for the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
“The NPT explicitly affirms the right of all member states to develop, research, and use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes,” Araghchi asserted. “Any suggestion to the contrary undermines this fundamental principle.”
Dismissal of Unfounded Claims
The Deputy FM further criticized the EU coordinator’s stance, arguing that it renders United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231—which endorsed the JCPOA—effectively meaningless. He also dismissed the so-called “snapback” mechanism as baseless and illegitimate under such misinterpretations.
Questioning EU’s Role in Future Talks
Araghchi concluded by questioning the relevance of the EU, its member states, and the UK in any future negotiations if such positions persist. “Their participation would be irrelevant and, consequently, without purpose,” he stated.
Iran remains committed to its peaceful nuclear program and adherence to international agreements while rejecting any attempts to distort its legitimate rights.
