Tehran – An official statement from the University of Tehran has clarified the circumstances surrounding an explosion that occurred on Thursday at a laboratory within the university’s College of Engineering.
Cause of the Incident
According to the university’s public relations department, the incident, which took place at approximately 2:30 PM, was the result of an accident during the replacement of a hydrogen gas cylinder. This procedure led to a fire and subsequent explosion.
Tragic Outcome and Response
Tragically, the explosion resulted in the death of one master’s degree student. Two other students sustained injuries. University authorities reported that the general condition of the injured is good. After receiving initial treatment at the scene, they were promptly transferred to a hospital for further observation and care.
Emergency Services Deployment
Jalal Maleki, spokesperson for the Fire Department, confirmed a rapid emergency response. He stated that upon notification of the explosion at the educational center, four fully-equipped fire stations were dispatched to the location, arriving in less than five minutes.
Scene Assessment
Initial assessments from the scene described a two-story building with a 50-square-meter laboratory on the ground floor where a group was working. The force of the hydrogen cylinder explosion was significant, causing the destruction of laboratory windows, doors, and a portion of the interior walls. In addition to the fatal casualty and the two seriously injured individuals, several others sustained minor injuries from flying glass and concrete debris.
