Title: Strategic Shuffle: Esteghlal’s Early-Season Challenges Under Review
Article:
A former coach of the iconic Tehran-based football club, Esteghlal, has broken down the team’s tactical and managerial challenges in the early stages of the new Persian Gulf Pro League season, highlighting both concerns and positive signs of progress.
A Team in Search of Its Core
Betash Fariba, who has previously managed the Blues, pointed to a lack of a settled starting lineup as a primary issue. “Even by the sixth week, Esteghlal has not yet identified its main combination, with three to four players changing in the lineup each match,” Fariba stated. While acknowledging that this indicates considerable depth in the squad, he emphasized the necessity for stability, using last season’s champions, Tractor, as a domestic example of how a consistent lineup breeds success.
Internal Dynamics Under the Spotlight
The former coach also expressed strong disapproval of Head Coach João Santos “Sapinto” publicly stating that his trust in defender Aref Aghasi had been lost following mistakes. Fariba described this as a matter that should have been handled within the team. “Such public statements can negatively impact the morale and confidence of the entire squad,” he cautioned, adding that he still believes Aghasi and Arshad Ashurmatov are the best defensive pairing for the team.
Fan Expectations and Managerial Patience
Addressing the visible discontent from the club’s massive fanbase, Fariba affirmed their right to demand victories, praising their unwavering support across Tehran. However, he urged for perspective, recalling the “bitter experience” of changing managers too early in previous seasons. “I previously warned against replacing [former coach] Nekounam, and precisely the issues I predicted came to pass,” he noted, stressing that the same principle of patience applies now to avoid another disruptive managerial transition.
Glimmers of Hope and a Rising Star
Despite the criticisms, Fariba presented an optimistic technical analysis of the team’s recent performances. He highlighted a clear upward trajectory, specifically praising Esteghlal’s second-half displays against Peykan and Chadormalu. “The team created numerous chances and displayed fluid, penetrating football,” he observed.
A key bright spot, according to Fariba, is the emergence of midfielder Esmail Ghalizadeh. “He is the promise of a powerful, combative, and goal-scoring attacking midfielder for Esteghlal,” Fariba said, drawing from his own experience in the role. He urged for Ghalizadeh to be utilized more, citing his all-around contribution in the last match.
A Tight League Table
Concluding on a reassuring note, the former coach contextualized Esteghlal’s 7-point tally after six weeks. He reminded observers that the gap to league leaders Tractor is only two points, a much smaller deficit than in seasons past. “There is absolutely no reason for concern, especially given the progressive and improving trend the team is showing,” Fariba asserted.
