
Instagram’s Strategic Shift: A New Interface Prioritizes Video and Messaging in 2025
In a significant move to reshape user experience, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has announced a major overhaul of the platform’s core navigation bar, set for a full rollout in 2025. This redesign, currently in a testing phase with select users, strategically reorients the interface around its two most dynamic features: Reels and Direct Messaging.
A Modernized Navigation Bar
The familiar five-tab menu—comprising Home, Search, Create Post, Reels, and Profile—is being replaced by a more streamlined and modern layout. The new structure elevates the prominence of Reels and Direct Messages by moving them to the second and third positions, respectively. Consequently, the dedicated tabs for Search and creating a new post will be removed from the main navigation bar, signaling a shift in how users are expected to interact with the app.
Enhanced User Interaction
Accompanying this layout change is the introduction of a new gesture-based navigation feature. Users will be able to seamlessly swipe between different sections of the app, promising a more fluid and intuitive experience. In a post on Threads, Mosseri explained the rationale, stating, “We’ve designed Instagram’s structure based on popular user activities, as what most people use are Reels and Direct.”
Part of a Long-Term Strategic Vision
This update is not a spontaneous decision but a calculated component of Meta’s broader, long-term strategy to align its platforms with evolving user behaviors. Mosseri has previously emphasized that Reels and Direct Messaging have been the primary drivers of Instagram’s growth over recent years. This redesign formalizes that reality, placing these high-engagement tools at the forefront of the user journey.
