Spanish PM: Netanyahu’s Actions Will Be Remembered as One of the Darkest Chapters of the 21st Century
Spanish Leader Condemns Israeli PM’s Policies, Calls for EU Action
Madrid – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has strongly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies, declaring that they will be remembered as one of the darkest episodes of the 21st century.
In a speech before Spain’s parliament, Sánchez condemned the devastating humanitarian consequences of Israel’s actions, stating, “The horrifying images of children searching for their families under rubble or dying of hunger in tents should not only move and shame us—they must compel the international community, especially Europe, to act.”
Spain and Ireland Push for EU Review of Israel’s Compliance
Sánchez revealed that Spain and Ireland had urged the European Union in February 2024 to assess Israel’s adherence to the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which links cooperation to human rights obligations.
“We had to fight hard for this review,” he said, noting that the EU’s special representative submitted a report on June 23 concluding there was sufficient evidence that Israel had violated Article 2 of the agreement, which ties partnership to respect for human rights.
Spain Demands Immediate Suspension of EU-Israel Agreement
Despite the findings, Sánchez expressed frustration that the EU has yet to take concrete action against Israel. “While the EU has done nothing, Spain demands the immediate suspension of this agreement,” he asserted.
In a sharp rebuke, the Spanish leader accused Israel of committing what he described as “genocide in Palestine” and criticized Europe for failing to do enough to prevent it.
Sánchez’s remarks underscore growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis and highlight Spain’s firm stance on holding Israel accountable under international law.
