China Champions Diplomatic Path for Iran Nuclear Issue, Criticizes U.S. Unilateralism
In a firm declaration of its foreign policy stance, China has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue, positioning itself as a key advocate for multilateralism and political dialogue.
A Call for Diplomacy Over Coercion
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, articulated Beijing’s position, stating that the only viable path forward is through political and diplomatic channels. He explicitly opposed the use of force, threats, sanctions, and pressure, emphasizing that such measures are counterproductive.
“The imposition of the snapback mechanism is not a constructive move,” Guo stated, “and it reverses the political and diplomatic process of resolving the issue.”
Root of the Crisis Laid at Washington’s Door
The spokesperson directly addressed the origins of the current impasse, pointing to the unilateral actions of the previous U.S. administration. “The U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA is the root of today’s crisis,” Guo remarked, underscoring a central point of contention in the international community.
He called on the United States and European nations to demonstrate “political sincerity,” intensify their diplomatic efforts, and guide the Iranian nuclear file back toward a political settlement to prevent any further escalation of tensions.
Setback at the UN Security Council
These comments were made in response to the recent failure of the UN Security Council to adopt a draft resolution, jointly proposed by China and Russia. The resolution aimed to technically extend the provisions of Resolution 2231. According to the Chinese diplomat, the objective of their proposal was to create more time and space for diplomatic negotiations and to foster favorable conditions for achieving a final political solution.
Following the rejection of the draft, China’s representative at the Security Council expressed regret and urged the three European nations to engage in negotiations with Iran in good faith. Russia has echoed this position, asserting that the attempted re-imposition of sanctions on Iran is legally void and impossible to implement.
Beijing’s Pledge: Impartiality and Constructive Engagement
Reaffirming China’s long-standing role, Guo pledged that Beijing will “continue to uphold an objective and fair position and play its constructive role” in facilitating a comprehensive solution that addresses the legitimate concerns of all parties involved. This statement positions China as a persistent and steady force for dialogue in a complex geopolitical landscape.
