
Iraq’s Al-Sudani Advocates for Iran-US Dialogue Amid Regional Stability Efforts
Baghdad, Iraq – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has underscored Baghdad’s support for dialogue between Iran and the United States, emphasizing its crucial role in fostering peaceful resolutions during a critical global and regional juncture. The Prime Minister’s remarks came during a meeting with French Minister of State for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, where discussions also centered on strengthening Iraq-France bilateral ties and regional security cooperation.
Championing Diplomatic Pathways
During his meeting with Barrot, Prime Minister al-Sudani highlighted Iraq’s conviction in the importance of diplomacy, particularly regarding the potential for scheduled talks between Iran and the United States. He stressed that dialogue is essential for achieving peaceful solutions, especially given the sensitive phase the world and the region are currently navigating. This stance reaffirms Iraq’s consistent efforts to promote de-escalation and stability through diplomatic engagement.
Iraq’s Commitment to Regional Security
The Prime Minister also detailed Iraq’s significant contributions to regional security, noting the nation’s recent assumption of serious responsibilities on behalf of the international community concerning the transfer of terrorists from prisons in Syria. He called for global support for Iraq in this critical endeavor and underscored the importance of continued cooperation with France to enhance Iraq’s defense capabilities, positioning Iraq as a proactive partner in counter-terrorism efforts.
Bolstering Ties with France
Furthering the discussion on international partnerships, al-Sudani conveyed Iraq’s strong desire to cultivate robust relations with France, with a particular focus on economic collaboration. He extended an invitation for French companies to explore opportunities in Iraq, encouraging the establishment of strong partnerships with Iraqi firms to boost economic and trade cooperation, thereby contributing to Iraq’s development and reconstruction processes.
Minister Barrot, conveying greetings from President Emmanuel Macron, commended Prime Minister al-Sudani’s pivotal role in preserving security and stability both within Iraq and across the wider region, acknowledging his significant efforts in Iraq’s reconstruction. Barrot reiterated France’s keen interest in expanding its presence in Iraq, citing the participation of 20 French companies across various sectors at the recent Baghdad International Exhibition as testament to this commitment. The French Minister also expressed Paris’s readiness to collaborate with Iraq in promoting regional stability and coordinating efforts to eradicate terrorism, appreciating Iraq’s initiative in transferring terrorist prisoners as a step towards regional security.
