Analyst: Iran Poses Formidable Challenge to US Aims
Tehran – A seasoned Iranian diplomat and analyst has offered a detailed perspective on perceived US strategies toward Iran, asserting that Tehran presents a complex and resilient challenge to Washington’s objectives. Fereydoon Majlesi, in an interview with Fararu, underscored the current regional climate as exceptionally sensitive, drawing parallels to recent high-stakes developments, and suggesting that the United States is pursuing a multi-faceted approach to exert pressure.
Anticipating US Tactics
Majlesi noted that perceived US movements to support armed and trained forces near Iran’s borders were not surprising but, in fact, predictable. He stated that such tactics, including prior discussions among some US officials regarding arming elements perceived as internal opposition, represent a fundamental aspect of American strategy. “Americans have no compunction about arming individuals to challenge governance,” Majlesi observed, highlighting what he sees as a consistent US foreign policy tool.
Strategic Goals: Prolonging Conflict and Weakening Influence
According to Majlesi, the US seeks to prolong regional tensions, aiming to comprehensively weaken Iran’s strategic influence and resistance capabilities. He further asserted that equipping Kurdish ground forces along Iranian borders and offering them support is intended to empower certain internal elements, thereby creating conditions for a prolonged internal struggle. This protracted engagement, in the analyst’s view, would allow the US to activate various pressure points, despite any domestic political pressures faced by President Trump regarding ongoing conflicts.
Disrupting Communications and Regional Realignment
A key objective attributed by Majlesi to both the US and Israel in recent escalations is the disruption of military communication channels within Iran. He explained that sustained targeting of military bases, barracks, and command centers aims to dismantle these crucial links. However, Majlesi emphasized that despite these efforts, Iran’s communication networks have remained robust, and its responses to perceived aggressions against US and Israeli positions have continued with undiminished force.
The analyst also touched upon the delicate balance of regional alignments. While acknowledging Pakistan’s stated support for Saudi Arabia, Majlesi cautioned that broader involvement of other regional states would significantly heighten the sensitivity of the situation. He suggested that Turkey, despite outwardly advocating for reconciliation, subtly aligns with certain Arab states based on its own national interests.
Trump’s Ambition vs. Reality
Addressing President Trump’s often contradictory statements regarding Iran’s future, Majlesi characterized Trump as a figure who relishes a “cat and mouse” game. While Trump’s ultimate goal remains clear, Majlesi believes he is keen to avoid an expensive and drawn-out quagmire. The analyst suggested that Trump prefers to orchestrate specific changes in Iran’s governance rather than bear the substantial costs of widespread internal overhauls or endorse leadership from external figures. The US, Majlesi concluded, might seek to gain specific concessions in parts of Iran following any hostilities.
Majlesi firmly reiterated that Trump’s aspirations are not necessarily achievable and have already entailed significant human, material, and diplomatic costs for the United States. He concluded by asserting that “Iran is not an easy or readily achievable target for Trump,” underscoring the enduring complexity and resilience of the nation in the face of external pressures.
