Senior Diplomat Criticizes Europe’s Diminished Regional Role and Aimlessness
Tehran, Iran – Senior Iranian diplomat Seyyed Abbas Araqqi has sharply criticized the European Union, asserting that its regional geopolitical influence is “evaporating” due to a lack of strategic direction and a failure to comprehend dynamics within Iran. Araqqi’s comments, made on social media, highlight a perceived decline in Europe’s diplomatic standing, particularly concerning its engagement on Iranian affairs.
Munich Security Conference: From Forum to ‘Circus’
Araqqi expressed disappointment over the recent Munich Security Conference (MSC), traditionally regarded as a serious and credible event. He lamented its transformation into a “Munich Circus” when addressing Iran-related issues, suggesting a preference for superficial appearances over substantive content. “This decline, where appearances are prioritized over substance, carries significant messages,” Araqqi stated.
Europe’s Strategic Confusion and Geopolitical Drift
According to Araqqi, the EU appears “confused,” a state he attributes to its “inability to understand developments unfolding inside Iran.” This confusion, he argued, has led to a strategic aimlessness, resulting in the EU losing “all its geopolitical weight in our region.”
His critique extended specifically to Germany, which he claimed has taken the lead in “fully ceding its regional policy to Israel.” Araqqi concluded that the overall trajectory of Europe is “very grave and concerning.”
Paralysis in Nuclear Diplomacy
The practical implications of this perceived European decline are, for Araqqi, evident in the ongoing nuclear negotiations. He pointed to the “paralysis and insignificance of the EU and the European Troika (E3)”—referring to France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—in the discussions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
Araqqi noted that Europe, once a primary party to these dialogues, is now conspicuously absent from effective engagement. In stark contrast, he emphasized that “our friends in the region are acting far more effectively and beneficially than this incapable and marginalized European Troika.” This statement underscores a shift in regional alliances and influence as perceived by Tehran.
