Title: Meteorological Authority Issues Forecast and Guidance as Air Quality Deteriorates in Major Urban Centers
Stable Weather Pattern Intensifies Pollution
A stable atmospheric condition prevailing across the country is expected to continue until Tuesday, leading to a significant accumulation of air pollutants in industrial and densely populated cities, according to Iran’s Meteorological Organization. Sadeq Ziaeian, Head of the National Center for Weather Forecast and Crisis Management, provided this assessment in a detailed report on the country’s current atmospheric status.
Incoming Weather Shift and Regional Forecast
A change is anticipated by Wednesday, with an increase in cloud cover forecast for parts of the northwest. Meanwhile, mild and scattered rainfall is predicted for the coastal provinces bordering the Caspian Sea. For Tehran, today’s sky is forecast to be clear yet hazy, with temperatures ranging between 9 and 20 degrees Celsius.
Tehran’s Air Quality Reaches Unhealthy Levels
Mr. Ziaeian elaborated on the situation in the capital, stating that the onset of atmospheric stability over the past 48 hours has caused a reduction in the boundary layer height. This meteorological phenomenon has directly resulted in increased concentrations of pollutants, pushing the Air Quality Index (AQI) into the “unhealthy for all groups” range.
Concerns Over Particulate Matter and Limited Dispersion
The official noted that current light winds are insufficient to significantly disperse the pollution. There is a probability of smaller particulate matter (PM10) entering southern and southwestern parts of Tehran. Concurrently, the accumulation of finer particles (PM2.5) is intensifying in the city center due to a temperature inversion. The passage of an intra-provincial dust mass through the southern and southwestern areas of Tehran is also forecast for today.
Authorities Issue Orange-Level Advisory
The Meteorological Organization has issued an orange-level warning, indicating that without the effective management of pollutant sources, the AQI in industrial and high-traffic urban areas could reach hazardous levels during certain hours and in specific locations.
Five-Day Outlook for Tehran
The weather forecast for Tehran province over the next five days predicts clear to partly cloudy skies with occasional mild winds. However, authorities warn that the continued atmospheric stability and lack of significant wind, particularly in high-traffic urban zones, is expected to lead to a further buildup of pollutants, a decline in air quality, and a noticeable increase in the concentration of atmospheric contaminants.
