Title: Government Approves Significant 45% Pension Increase for Social Security Retirees
In a major policy move aimed at enhancing social welfare, the Iranian government has officially confirmed a substantial increase in pensions for the nation’s retirees. The raise, which has been formally communicated by the First Vice President, is set to be deposited for the month of September, marking a significant boost to household income for millions.
A Landmark Decision for Social Welfare
The increase was formally approved by the Council of Ministers in a session on September 3, 2024, based on a proposal from the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour, and Social Welfare. The decision, enacted under Articles 96 and 111 of the Social Security Law, underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting its retired citizens and ensuring the stability of the social security system.
Key Details of the Pension Adjustment
The new directive outlines a tiered increase structure designed to provide the most substantial support to those with the lowest incomes:
- Retirees, disability pensioners, and survivors whose benefits were established by the end of 2023 and whose income was at or below the minimum wage set by the Supreme Labour Council will receive a 45 percent increase.
- Other pensioners receiving above the minimum wage will be granted a 32 percent increase plus a fixed amount of 931,060 tomans.
- Family and child allowances for dependents of Social Security pensioners have been aligned with those provided to retirees of executive agencies.
Enhanced Minimum Monthly Income
A central feature of this resolution is the establishment of a new floor for total monthly income. For minimum-wage pensioners, the combined total of their pension and ancillary benefits must now reach no less than 15,803,000 tomans per month. This adjustment represents one of the highest percentage increases for Social Security retirees in recent years.
This proactive measure is seen as a direct reflection of the government’s focus on economic justice and its dedication to improving the living standards of its senior citizens, ensuring they receive the support they deserve after years of service to the nation.
