Title: Diplomatic Shifts: Cairo Framework Concludes as Iran Cites “Illegal” Pressure at IAEA
Tehran Responds to IAEA Resolution
In a significant diplomatic development, senior Iranian diplomat Seyed Abbas Araghchi has announced the formal termination of the Cairo understanding, a key framework governing the country’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The decision comes in direct response to what Iranian officials have labeled an “illegal and unjustified” move by the United States and three European nations at the IAEA Board of Governors.
A Move Seen as Undermining Cooperation
According to reports, Mr. Araghchi strongly criticized the recent anti-Iran resolution passed at the IAEA. He stated that the action, pushed through by the four countries despite opposition or abstention from 15 other members, damages the credibility and independence of the international agency. He further asserted that such measures, which he characterized as disregarding Iran’s constructive engagement and good faith, disrupt the process of ongoing cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.
The End of a Chapter
The senior official clarified that while the basis for the Cairo understanding in safeguards relations was effectively nullified following a previous “illegal action” by the three European countries at the UN Security Council, its termination has now been made official. A formal letter has been sent to the Director General of the IAEA, declaring the understanding invalid and concluded.
This move marks a pivotal moment, signaling a recalibration of diplomatic engagements in the wake of recent international actions.
