Diplomatic Rift Emerges as US Lawmakers’ Israel Trip Halted Amid Iran Oil Facility Debate
A planned visit by two senior US lawmakers to Israel has reportedly been canceled or postponed, signaling a potential diplomatic rift over recent military actions targeting Iranian oil infrastructure. Representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were slated for what would have been the first high-level US visit to Israel since the current period of regional tensions escalated, have reportedly put their trip on hold.
Trip Cancellation Amid Reports of Disagreement
Israeli media, including Channel 12, reported the cancellation without specifying official reasons. However, political sources indicate the decision stems from a significant disagreement between Washington and Tel Aviv regarding recent Israeli strikes. These strikes, reportedly carried out last Saturday, targeted approximately 30 Iranian fuel depots.
US officials have conveyed that the extensive scale of these attacks significantly exceeded Washington’s expectations, marking the first serious divergence between the two allies since the current military engagements began.
Washington’s Concerns Over Scope of Attacks
An unnamed senior US security official revealed that while Tel Aviv had informed Washington of its intent to target Iranian oil infrastructure, the extensive scope of the operations was not communicated. The US military had anticipated a more limited and largely symbolic strike and was reportedly surprised by the broader range of Israel’s actions.
Furthermore, some American officials have voiced concerns that targeting critical infrastructure, including facilities supplying fuel to Tehran residents, could prove counterproductive. They fear such actions might inadvertently strengthen Iran’s position and turn public opinion against both Israel and the United States. This reported disagreement aligns with earlier statements from US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who previously affirmed that the United States does not intend to target Iran’s energy infrastructure.
Broader Regional Context
These developments unfold amidst a backdrop of escalating military actions initiated by Israel and the US against Iran since February 28th. These actions have reportedly resulted in the martyrdom of hundreds, including Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and several commanders and security officials. In response, Iran has reportedly launched missiles and drones towards Israel and various US interests across the region, including in Gulf states, Jordan, and Iraq.
