Article:
New Measures to Improve Urban Air Quality
In a decisive move to address air pollution, Tehran’s Traffic Police have announced the implementation of heightened penalties for vehicles violating environmental traffic regulations. The new measures, which took effect recently, are part of a broader initiative to improve air quality in the capital, particularly during periods of significant pollution.
Breakdown of the New Penalties
Colonel Firouz Kashir, the Deputy for Social Affairs and Traffic Culture of Tehran’s Traffic Police, provided a detailed breakdown of the new fine structure. Vehicles found in violation of the regulations will now face substantial penalties, which can accumulate for multiple infractions.
The specific violations and their corresponding fines are as follows:
- Smoke-Producing Vehicles: A fine of 200,000 Tomans for cars emitting excessive smoke.
- Lacking a Valid Vehicle Inspection Certificate: A fine of 100,000 Tomans for failure to present a valid technical inspection certificate.
- Violating the Odd-Even Traffic Scheme: A fine of 200,000 Tomans for vehicles entering restricted zones on days that do not correspond with their license plate number.
Colonel Kashir emphasized that drivers committing multiple infractions simultaneously could face cumulative fines reaching up to 500,000 Tomans per vehicle.
Initial Phase Focused on Public Awareness
Authorities have noted that the first day of the new regulation’s enforcement was primarily dedicated to raising public awareness. Police officers issued warnings and guidance to motorists, with no fines being levied on the initial day. However, officials have made it clear that a stricter approach will follow.
“Starting tomorrow, dealing with violators will be serious,” Colonel Kashir stated, underscoring the transition from an advisory to an enforcement phase. This graduated approach highlights the government’s commitment to both public education and the rigorous application of laws designed to safeguard public health and the environment.
