Title: Syria’s Energy Minister Heads to Baghdad for Key Talks on Oil Transit and Water Management
Baghdad Welcomes High-Level Syrian Delegation
Iraq’s Chargé d’Affaires in Damascus, Yassin Sharif Al-Hajimi, confirmed that Syria’s Energy Minister, Mohammad Al-Bashir, will travel to Baghdad on an official invitation from Iraq’s Oil Minister, Hayan Abdul Ghani. The visit underscores deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
Focus on Oil Transit Agreement
A central topic of discussion will be the potential transit of Iraqi oil through Syrian territory to the Mediterranean via the port of Banias. The talks aim to establish mutual understandings that could enhance regional energy logistics and economic ties.
Addressing Water Scarcity Challenges
Minister Al-Bashir is also scheduled to meet with Iraq’s Water Resources Minister, Aoun Dhiab, to discuss joint solutions for water management. Key among the agenda items is a proposed reduction in Euphrates River water releases—from 500 to 300 cubic meters per second—to mitigate the impacts of drought and resource scarcity.
The high-stakes meetings highlight the shared priorities of Iraq and Syria in strengthening infrastructure collaboration amid regional challenges.
