Iran Halts Gas Exports to Turkey Amid Reports of Israeli Strike on South Pars Field
TEHRAN – Iran has suspended its natural gas exports to Turkey, a decision that comes amidst heightened regional tensions and following reports of an Israeli airstrike on Iran’s vast South Pars gas field last week. The halt marks a significant development in energy geopolitics, with potential implications for regional stability and energy supply chains.
Export Suspension Details
Bloomberg, citing informed sources, reported the cessation of natural gas deliveries. The move follows claims by Iranian officials regarding an attack on critical energy infrastructure. For Turkey, Iran has been a notable energy supplier, providing 14% of its natural gas needs last year. While the exact duration of the suspension remains unclear, Turkey currently maintains gas imports from Russia and Azerbaijan, alongside its strategic reserves.
Alleged Attack on South Pars
On March 18, the governor of Asaluyeh County in Iran’s Bushehr province reported that multiple facilities at the South Pars gas field experienced fires. These incidents were attributed by Iranian officials to what they described as an “Israeli and American attack.” The South Pars field is a cornerstone of Iran’s energy production, making any disruption a matter of national and regional concern.
Escalating Regional Tensions
This development unfolds within a backdrop of intensified regional conflict and allegations of external aggression. Iranian reports have detailed a series of widespread attacks attributed to the United States and Israel against military and residential areas within Iran, commencing in late February. Among these reported aggressions, Iranian sources stated that an incident in Tehran led to the martyrdom of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei. Iranian officials have also reported that more than 1,300 individuals across the country have been martyred as a result of these attacks, which they attribute to Washington and the Zionist regime.
Iran’s Retaliatory Operations
In response to what Iranian authorities described as an imposed war by Washington and the Tel Aviv regime, the Iranian Armed Forces launched Operation “True Promise 4.” This operation, according to Iranian statements, targeted positions of the Zionist regime in occupied territories and U.S. military centers in West Asia, inflicting significant damage through multiple waves of attacks. The suspension of gas exports to Turkey, therefore, appears intertwined with Iran’s broader strategic responses to ongoing regional hostilities.
