EU Denounces Israel’s West Bank Land Registration as ‘Unlawful Escalation’
Brussels has issued a strong rebuke to Israel, condemning its new steps to register and settle lands in the occupied West Bank as a “fresh escalation” that is unlawful under international law. The European Union reiterated its firm opposition to any annexation of the West Bank and called for an immediate reversal of these decisions.
EU’s Stance on West Bank Actions
Speaking on Monday, Anoor Al-Anouni, spokesperson for the European Commission, declared that Israel’s decision to initiate land registration and settlement processes in the West Bank constitutes “a new escalation” in the volatile region. Al-Anouni underscored the EU’s long-standing position that any annexation of the West Bank is illegal under international law. The spokesperson emphasized the EU’s renewed demand for Israel to withdraw from these actions.
Historical Context of Israeli Measures
The condemnation follows recent approvals by Israeli officials for expanding settlements in the West Bank. Notably, Israel’s political-security cabinet recently sanctioned a plan to begin the process of surveying and registering lands in the West Bank – a measure reportedly not undertaken since 1967. This move is seen by the EU as a significant step with potentially far-reaching implications for regional stability and the prospects for a lasting peace.
