Iran’s Electoral Council Unveils Key Dates for Local Election Candidate Vetting
Tehran, Iran – As preparations intensify for the seventh term of Iran’s Islamic City and Rural Councils elections, the Central Oversight Board has announced that final decisions regarding candidate qualifications will be revealed on March 9th. This upcoming electoral cycle marks a significant step forward with the nationwide implementation of fully electronic voting for the first time.
Ali Keshvari, Spokesperson for the Central Oversight Board of Islamic Councils Elections, confirmed the timeline for the crucial candidate vetting results. “The final results will be announced on March 9th,” Keshvari stated. He further outlined a clear appeals process: “Should there be any objections to the outcomes, these will be thoroughly reviewed by the Central Oversight Board, leading to the ultimate declaration of confirmed qualifications.”
A key highlight of the upcoming elections, as emphasized by Keshvari, is the transition to an entirely electronic voting system for city and rural councils across the nation. This technological advancement is anticipated to bring multiple benefits. “This initiative will not only enhance transparency but also significantly improve the speed of result announcements and the accuracy of executive processes,” Keshvari explained, underscoring the government’s commitment to modernizing electoral procedures.
The spokesperson also detailed the multi-tiered review process for candidates. Initial assessments and vetting are conducted by county and provincial oversight boards. Following these reviews, candidates who do not receive initial approval will have the opportunity to electronically register their objections. For larger urban centers with populations exceeding 200,000, these appeals can be directly forwarded to the Central Oversight Board for further consideration.
