Final Whistle at Islamic Games: Iran Secures Third Place in the Medals Table
TEHRAN – The Iranian national freestyle wrestling team concluded its campaign at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on a powerful note, clinching four gold medals on the final day of competition and securing a top-three finish for the national contingent.
Gold Rush on the Mat
The wrestling finals showcased the prowess of Iran’s athletes, with Amirhossein Zare, a three-time World Champion and Olympic medalist, delivering a commanding performance. In the 125 kg weight class final, Zare dominated his opponent, Bahrain’s Shamil Sharifov, securing a flawless 10-0 victory to claim the gold medal.
Zare’s path to the podium was one of sheer dominance. He had previously overpowered Arslanbek Tordobekov of Kyrgyzstan 11-0 in the first round and then defeated Turkey’s Hakan Buyukcingil with a 7-0 score in the semi-finals.
He was not alone in his triumph. Rahman Amouzad (65 kg), Younes Emami (74 kg), and Amirali Azarpira (97 kg) also stood atop the podium, each winning gold for Iran. The team’s success was further bolstered by bronze medals from Ali Momeni (57 kg) and Kamran Ghasempour (86 kg).
A Strong Collective Showing
The wrestling team’s six-medal haul contributed significantly to Iran’s overall standing. The nation’s sports delegation concluded the Games with an impressive total of 81 medals: 29 gold, 19 silver, and 33 bronze. This formidable collection earned Iran a prominent third-place position in the final medals table, underscoring the competitive spirit and dedication of its athletes on an international stage.
