Iranian Foreign Ministry Condemns “Assassination” of Veteran Diplomat, Mourns Loss of “Pillar of Foreign Policy”
Tehran, Iran – April 1, 2024 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has issued a strong condemnation and expressed profound grief following the “assassination” of Dr. Seyed Kamal Kharrazi, a distinguished figure in Iranian foreign policy and former Minister of Foreign Affairs. The ministry announced his martyrdom on April 1, 2024 (12th Farvardin 1405), attributing the attack to “military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran.”
A Life Dedicated to Diplomacy and National Interests
Dr. Kharrazi, who also served as the head of the Strategic Council of Foreign Relations, was martyred in an incident that also claimed the life of his devoted wife and left him injured, ultimately leading to his passing. The Foreign Ministry characterized the act as a “cowardly and criminal assassination,” emphasizing its continuation of “terrorist actions and gross violations of international law by the Israeli regime.”
“Disdain for Peace and Diplomacy” Highlighted
The ministry’s statement underscored that this “heinous crime” demonstrates the “criminal nature and fundamental animosity of this war-mongering regime towards peace and diplomacy.” It further suggested that the regime harbors “fear of the logic of dialogue and constructive engagement on the international stage.”
Honoring the Fallen, Reaffirming Commitment
The Iranian Foreign Ministry offered condolences to the Supreme Leader, Dr. Kharrazi’s family, and the Iranian diplomatic and academic communities. The statement also commemorated the martyrdom of Dr. Hossein Amirabdollahian, another prominent figure, and “all martyrs on the path of Iran’s honor and pride.” The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the “proud path” of these martyrs in safeguarding Iran’s security and national interests.
