France Issues Stern Warning Over Journalist Deaths in Lebanon
Paris Condemns Alleged Deliberate Targeting of Media Personnel
France has issued a strong condemnation and a stark warning following the reported killing of three journalists in southern Lebanon. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that if Israel is found to have deliberately targeted these media personnel, it would constitute an extremely serious act and a flagrant violation of international law.
Speaking to French television channel France 3, the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, emphasized the gravity of the situation. He highlighted that journalists, even when operating in conflict zones and interacting with warring parties, should never be targeted.
“If it is truly confirmed that these journalists were deliberately targeted by the Israeli army, this would be a very serious matter and a clear violation of international law,” Barrot stated. He underscored the fundamental principle that journalists in active conflict areas are protected and must not become the subject of direct attacks.
The incident raises significant concerns about the safety of media workers in the region and the adherence to international humanitarian principles during ongoing hostilities. France’s firm stance signals a call for accountability and a demand for adherence to established international norms concerning the protection of civilians, including those in journalistic roles.
