Title: Government Clarifies Inflation Control Strategy, Denies 2026 Gasoline Price Decision
Tehran – In a detailed address on economic governance, a senior government official has outlined the collaborative institutional framework responsible for managing inflation, while firmly dismissing speculation about imminent changes to gasoline pricing in the upcoming fiscal year.
Coordinated Economic Governance
Seyed Kamel Taghvinejad, Secretary of the Government’s Presidium, clarified the roles of key financial bodies in a recent press briefing. He emphasized that while the Central Bank holds the primary mandate for controlling inflation, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance is responsible for the nation’s overarching fiscal policies.
“Inflation is a matter that falls within the duties of the Central Bank, which must ultimately pursue it,” Taghvinejad stated. “However, fundamental economic policies lie with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance.”
A Multi-Agency Approach
The official elaborated that several institutions share responsibility in this arena. He identified the Planning and Budget Organization and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance as pivotal entities, each with distinct roles in controlling different sectors of the economy and managing fiscal policy. The Central Bank, he reiterated, maintains overall responsibility for monetary policy.
Taghvinejad stressed the profound interconnection between these levers of power. “It is not the case that these monetary and fiscal policies do not influence each other,” he said. “Naturally, these tools must be used in specific economic conditions, whether in a contractionary or expansionary capacity.”
Capital Market’s Role in Stability
He further highlighted the influence of the capital market, which is managed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, on inflation. The official argued that all financial instruments at the ministry’s disposal significantly impact inflation rates.
“Therefore,” he concluded, “the pivotal role of controlling inflation must be carried out through the collaboration of these institutions and the Economic Council.”
No Decision on Gasoline Prices for 2026
In response to direct questions regarding fuel prices in the national budget for the Iranian year 1405 (2026), Taghvinejad offered a clear and definitive statement.
“The issue of gasoline is under expert review,” he declared, “and no decision whatsoever has been made about it.” This announcement serves to quell rumors and confirms that any potential policy changes remain under formal consideration, with no final determinations reached.
