Germany Reiterates Support for Diplomatic Path on Iranian Nuclear Program
In a recent statement to Germany’s Funke Media Group, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has reaffirmed his country’s position on Iran’s nuclear file, emphasizing a dual-track approach of diplomacy and pressure.
A Firm Stance on Non-Proliferation
Minister Wadephul was unequivocal in his central message: “Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon.” He positioned this objective as a cornerstone of global security and non-proliferation efforts. The German diplomat stressed that the ultimate goal remains a negotiated solution that would permanently and verifiably restrict Iran’s nuclear program.
The Path of Diplomacy Remains Open
Despite the re-imposition of UN sanctions, the Foreign Minister insisted that diplomacy is not off the table. “For this reason, we continue to seek a solution through negotiation to resolve this issue once and for all,” he stated. He extended an offer to Tehran, confirming that the proposal to resume negotiations “is still on the table,” expressing hope that Iranian leadership would “now move in the right direction.”
Justification for Sanctions
The minister defended the decision to reinstate sanctions, claiming that a lack of perceived transparency and credibility from Tehran during previous nuclear talks left no other viable option. He expressed confidence that the newly implemented sanctions would have a “significant impact” on the Iranian economy, viewing them as a necessary measure to encourage a return to the negotiating table under terms acceptable to the international community.
