Google Meet Enters the AI Arena: A New Tool for the Digital Professional
In a strategic move to enhance its competitive standing, Google Meet has unveiled a new AI-powered feature: digital makeup. This innovation allows users to digitally enhance their appearance during video calls, eliminating the need for physical cosmetics. The update positions Google to more effectively compete with rival platforms like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, which have previously offered similar digital touch-up tools.
The Mechanics of AI Enhancement
Reports indicate the new feature is located within the “Appearance” settings, under the “Portrait touch-up” submenu—a section available since 2023 for skin smoothing, under-eye brightening, and eye whitening. Now, users can select from 12 distinct makeup styles to present a natural and professional look in video conferences. A key technical achievement is the AI’s ability to keep the digital makeup synchronized with the user’s movements; for instance, the filter remains accurately in place even when the user turns their head.
User Control and Accessibility
The feature is disabled by default, giving users full control to activate it before or during a video call. Once a preferred style is selected, Google Meet saves the setting for future meetings. The offering includes 12 studio-quality styles, all powered by AI to ensure the digital makeup blends naturally with facial movements and remains consistent as the user moves in front of the camera.
This tool is available for both web and mobile applications. Access is currently granted to Google Workspace users on the Business Standard, Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Education Plus plans (with the Teaching and Learning upgrade). Users on individual Google One and Workspace subscriptions are expected to gain access soon.
A Practical Solution for the Modern Workforce
By introducing this capability, Google Meet provides a practical solution for the growing remote workforce, who often need to join video calls at a moment’s notice. The digital makeup, which includes foundation, lipstick, and other subtle enhancements, not only refines the user’s on-screen presence but also significantly reduces preparation time before important meetings.
