Title: Reza Shokari on Esteghlal’s Interest: “My Heart is with Persepolis”
In a recent television appearance, newly-signed Persepolis footballer Reza Shokari detailed the circumstances of his transfer and addressed ongoing speculation within the Iranian Pro League.
A Last-Minute Transfer
Shokari, who joined Persepolis from Sepahan during the summer transfer window, revealed that his move was far from certain. He stated that while he was on manager Osmar Vieira’s list, complications with his transfer release initially caused the deal to fall through.
“The transfer was almost canceled,” Shokari explained. “After a week or two, I found out and contacted the club. I informed them that I was currently a free agent and that if Mr. Kartal wanted me, I could join Persepolis. He then gave the order to sign me.”
Addressing Team Speculation
The defender also commented on reports surrounding teammate Serge Owusu’s health, dismissing any concerns about its impact on the squad. “This does not harm the players. His level of play is high, and he is gradually getting ready. I am not fully aware of the details, but Owusu is a very good player,” Shokari remarked.
Loyalty to the Reds
The most telling segment of the interview came when Shokari was questioned about past interest from rival club Esteghlal. He confirmed that he had received serious offers from the blue side of Tehran during the tenures of both managers Farhad Majidi and Vahid Amraei.
“I always had offers from Esteghlal,” he acknowledged. “They were seriously pursuing me, but I told them I could not join Esteghlal because I am a Persepolis fan. They said football is a professional business, but I replied that only Persepolis is in my heart, and I could not make that move.”
Shokari’s candid comments highlight the intense passion and deep-seated loyalties that define Iran’s most storied football rivalry.
