Iran Announces Strategic Wheat Pricing for New Agricultural Year, Bolstering Farmer Support
Tehran – In a decisive move to support its agricultural sector, Iran has finalized the guaranteed purchase price for wheat for the upcoming 2024-2025 farming year. The strategic pricing policy, set by the Council for Pricing and Adoption of Supportive Policies for Essential Agricultural Products, aims to ensure economic stability for the nation’s farmers.
The New Pricing Structure
After extensive deliberations, the council has established a base price of 29,500 Tomans per kilogram for wheat. An additional 500 Tomans per kilogram has been allocated as an insurance premium for the country’s wheat fields. This brings the total guaranteed purchase value to 30,000 Tomans per kilogram.
Upon delivery of their wheat to the government, farmers will receive 29,500 Tomans directly into their accounts. The remaining 500 Tomans will be directed to the Agricultural Products Insurance Fund to cover comprehensive, high-risk insurance for wheat farms across the nation.
A Deliberative Process for a Key Commodity
The announcement, made on Monday, concludes a four-month process that involved six sessions of a specialized commission and four meetings of the main pricing council. The thorough review underscores the commodity’s vital role in Iran’s food security and economic planning. The Minister of Agriculture, as the head of the council, is set to formally communicate the directive within the week.
Focus on Quality-Based Procurement
A significant feature of this year’s procurement plan is the intention to base purchases on grain quality. The pricing framework is designed to be variable, ranging from 27,500 to 29,500 Tomans, incentivizing higher-quality production. The successful implementation of this quality-based system is recognized as being contingent on the expansion of laboratory facilities for accurate product grading, a point highlighted during the council’s discussions.
This new pricing policy is seen as a cornerstone of the government’s supportive approach to the agricultural community, reinforcing the strategic importance of domestic wheat production for the nation.
