Title: Iran Confirms No Pilgrims Detained in Saudi Arabia, Highlights Diplomatic Cooperation
Head of Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization Announces Positive Status of Iranian Pilgrims
In a significant development reflecting improved bilateral relations, the Head of Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, Alireza Rashidian, has confirmed that there are currently no Iranian pilgrims detained in Saudi Arabia. This announcement underscores the successful diplomatic and consular cooperation between the two nations.
Diplomatic Channels Ensure Pilgrim Safety
When questioned about the status of detainees given the active diplomacy between Tehran and Riyadh, Rashidian stated, “To the best of our knowledge, the last detainee was transferred to the country last year, and we currently have no one [detained].” He further emphasized that should any such cases arise, they fall under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which can actively pursue them through its operational embassy and consulate.
A Vision for a “Smart Hajj”
Speaking to reporters after his inauguration ceremony, Rashidian outlined the primary mission of his organization. He referenced an official mandate from the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, which details eight key priorities. A central focus, he revealed, is to steer the Hajj and pilgrimage process towards a “Smart Hajj.”
This initiative aims to create a seamless and dignified pilgrimage experience for Iranian citizens. Rashidian expressed hope to advance these goals during his tenure, particularly under current economic conditions that pose challenges in financial relations and currency transfer.
Economic Coordination for a Smooth Pilgrimage
Addressing logistical and economic concerns, the new head of the organization added, “We are hopeful that, based on the promises and agreements with economic officials, especially the Central Bank, we can secure and transfer the necessary foreign currency for the Hajj—a portion of which has already been finalized—so that we face no problems in the execution of the Hajj.”
Ongoing Pilgrimage Operations
Rashidian also confirmed that registration for the Hajj pilgrimage is ongoing and that Umrah trips are currently proceeding. He noted that discussions have been held with the CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Airlines to explore the possibility of increasing flight capacity for Umrah pilgrims.
When asked about Umrah trips being offered at high prices of 130 to 150 million Tomans, Rashidian clarified that this pertained to a previous period and is not reflective of the current situation.
