Iranian Football Icon Ali Daei Pays Tribute to Late Persepolis Veteran
Iran’s sporting community is in mourning following the passing of former national team and Persepolis club star, Manouchehr Shafaghatian. The news has prompted an outpouring of tribute, notably from Iranian football legend Ali Daei, who offered his heartfelt condolences.
A Heartfelt Condolence
In a public statement, Daei expressed his profound sorrow. “I sincerely offer my condolences for this loss to the bereaved Shafaghatian family, the veterans of football, and the country’s sports community,” Daei stated. “I pray for divine forgiveness for him from the Almighty God.”
Daei also expressed his regret at being unable to attend the funeral service due to his absence from Tehran, but affirmed his intention to pay his respects at a memorial service if he is in the city.
Remembering a Bygone Era
Praising the late footballer’s character and dedication, Daei highlighted Shafaghatian’s unwavering commitment. “Mr. Shafaghatian was from a generation that had a particular passion for their team’s jersey and club,” he recalled.
Daei remembered him as a player with a “vigorous and solid” style of football. He particularly emphasized Shafaghatian’s selfless dedication during the 1980s and 1990s, noting that “for the love of Persepolis, he did not focus on material gains, and this is commendable.”
An Unfulfilled Coaching Passion
Beyond his playing career, Daei revealed Shafaghatian’s deep desire to contribute to the future of Iranian sports. Having completed all his coaching certifications, Shafaghatian held a “great interest in coaching, educating the youth, and talent-scouting.”
Daei concluded his tribute by honoring the late star’s personal integrity, stating, “What remains in my mind of Mr. Manouchehr, aside from his passionate games, was the dignity and self-respect he possessed.” He ended with a prayer for Shafaghatian’s soul to rest in peace.
